Dry Brush Technique in Modeling

Dry brushing is one of the most useful painting techniques in model making for highlighting details, textures, and reliefs on miniatures and scale models. In this guide, we explain what it is, what materials you need, and how to apply it step by step, with advanced tips to take your figures and vehicles to the next level.

What is the dry brush technique?

The dry brush (or dry brushingIt is a painting technique that involves applying very little paint to the brush, so that the color is only deposited on the raised and relief areas of the piece. The result is a very realistic light and shadow effect that highlights textures, sculpted details, and volumes.

What is it used for in model making?

This technique is primarily used to highlight relief details on military figures (uniforms, equipment, musculature), mark panels and rivets on vehicles and aircraft, and create weathering, dust, or rust effects on dioramas and military vehicles. It is one of the basic techniques that should be mastered along with others. modeling techniques.

Materials needed for dry brushing

You don't need much to get started, but choosing the right brush and paint makes all the difference in the final result.

Brushes

For dry brushing, it's recommended to use a flat or filbert brush with sturdy synthetic bristles. Many modelers keep a slightly worn brush specifically for this technique, as constant rubbing wears down the bristles.

  • Flat brush or filbert with synthetic bristles.
  • A "work" brush to be reserved only for dry brushing.
  • Intermediate sizes (approx. from No. 2 to No. 6) depending on the size of the piece.

Paintings

Modeling acrylics work very well for this technique, especially in their original consistency, without being too diluted. If you have any doubts about which paint to choose, we recommend reading What is the best paint for model making?.

  • Vallejo modeling acrylics.
  • Optional: dry pigments to enhance the final weathering effect.

How to apply the dry brush technique step by step

Brush preparation

Load the brush with a small amount of paint and discharge almost all of it onto a kitchen paper towel or napkin, until there are hardly any visible traces left on the bristles.

Application on the thumbnail

Gently brush over the raised areas of the piece in circular or sweeping motions. The paint will only settle on the raised areas, leaving the hollows and lower areas barely touched. If you'd like to review the basics before starting, consult our guide to how to paint model making.

Lighting and edge marking (advanced technique)

For a more professional finish, work in progressive layers: first apply a medium tone to the entire raised surface and finish with a lighter tone only on the edges and sharpest corners. This creates a much more realistic sense of depth and volume, commonly used on military vehicles and figures.

Common mistakes when dry brushing

  • Using too much paint on the brush: It saturates the detail instead of highlighting it.
  • Do not allow to dry completely between layers.: It mixes the tones and muddies the result.
  • Use a new brush with very soft bristles: It wears out quickly and gives inconsistent results.
  • Not cleaning the brush properly between colors: contaminates the following tones.

Frequently asked questions about the dry brush technique

What is the difference between dry brushing and regular painting?

Normal paint covers the surface evenly, while dry brushing only deposits color in the higher and raised areas, creating a light and shadow effect.

Which brushes are better for dry brushing: new or old?

Brushes that are already somewhat worn tend to give better results, since the stiffer bristles help control the amount of paint that is deposited.

Can you do dry brushing with regular acrylic paint?

Yes, modeling acrylics work perfectly for this technique, as long as the paint is used without being excessively diluted.

Is dry brushing suitable for painting vehicles and not just figures?

Yes, it is a technique widely used on military vehicles to highlight rivets, panels and weathering effects, as well as on figures and dioramas.

How do I clean the brush after using it? (Is it dry?)

Using water and neutral soap, gently rub the bristles until the dried paint residue is removed, then leave it to dry horizontally.
