- The typical Dunkelgrau RAL 7021 (dark gray) camouflage scheme began to be used in the late 1930s and was the standard scheme on German armored vehicles during the early years of World War II. It became common not only in the Wehrmacht but on virtually all German military vehicles of the time, making it undoubtedly one of the longest-used paint schemes in the initial phase of the conflict, applied by a large number of units and a multitude of different vehicles. It is characterized by a uniform shade of Dunkelgrau, designed to blend into urban and industrial environments, as well as to facilitate mass production. Among the best-known vehicles that used this camouflage are the Panzer I, II, III, and IV tanks; the early version of the Tiger I; and reconnaissance vehicles. Sd.Kfz. 222 and 223; the half-tracks Sd.Kfz. 251; self-propelled guns such as the StuG III; and many other vehicles, armored or not, used by German forces in the campaigns in Poland, France, and the early stages of the Eastern Front. Although Dunkelgrau was the predominant color, combinations with other shades were also used to adapt to different operational environments, for example Dunkelbraun RAL 7017 (dark brown), Grün RAL 6002 (green), Olivgrün RAL 6003 (olive green), Sandgrau RAL 7027 (sand gray), and even white paint for snowy environments.
